Fremantle Court, Stoke Mandeville

Part of a new generation of care homes, Fremantle Court in Stoke Mandeville passed the University of Stirling DSDC (Dementia Services Development Centre) Gold Standard.

The unique layout with splayed ‘living wings’ which fan out from the centre of the building is a blueprint for future design. Each wing has an atrium to give high levels of natural light. It is one of the few in the country to achieve BREEAM Very Good. The home has a new on-site woodland and allotment gardens for each household.

The grounds are non-conventional, the idea being to create new woodland along the boundaries that would enhance and complement the existing trees and help to ground the building. Wildflower meadows were seeded to act as an intermediary between the woodland and the more manicured areas. The gardens that sit between the wings and the courtyard gardens are landscaped with sensory plants.
