Christopher Rooney on Collaboration for Highgate Newtown Community Centre

Associate and Architect Christopher Rooney reflects on the award-winning Highgate Newtown Community Centre, a vibrant, welcoming development that brings together a community centre, a public square, and 41 new affordable homes. More than enhancing the local landscape, Highgate Newtown actively fosters a strong sense of community.

Close collaboration between Hunters and RCKa was central to the project’s success, demonstrating how thoughtful architectural partnership can shape meaningful places.

At Newtown, a friendly and open community has already taken root. Public spaces sit at the heart of the development and are actively used and enjoyed by local residents.

Distinctive brickwork and a permeable layout, with routes running through the site, create an inviting presence within the neighbourhood. This design encourages movement and activity and supports a sense of natural safety for residents.
