New Medical Centre for Portsmouth

The Hunters-designed Highclere Medical Centre has officially completed. The new facility will accommodate six consulting rooms and three treatment rooms, centred around a bright and uplifting entrance and waiting area. All primary consultancy and treatment spaces are positioned along the building’s perimeter to maximise natural light, with a clear spatial distinction between public, clinical, and staff zones.

The layout is informed by a thorough analysis of clinical workflows and activity in the former centre, combined with projections for performance in the new facility.

The building massing is carefully considered to relate to the height of neighbouring properties, while a striking double-height aluminium entrance, extended at the corner, serves as a visual marker for the new practice. The red brick façades, detailed with textured protrusions, reflect the local architectural vernacular. A lime green canopy and horizontal brise soleil animate the entrance, adding a vibrant and welcoming character. The careful use of colour in the internal spaces supports wayfinding while enhancing the overall quality of the spaces.

The new centre sits on the site of a former car park and is surrounded by mature trees, which have been preserved to soften the scheme visually and provide natural shading. The design also responds sensitively to the adjacent Treetops Sexual Assault Referral Centre, with carefully planned pedestrian routes that ensure privacy and prevent visual interaction between the two buildings.

Delivered on behalf of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, the project involved relocating an outdated GP surgery from unsuitable premises into a purpose-built, modern environment. The new Highclere Medical Centre offers patients and staff a significantly improved healthcare setting and is set to become a vital hub for the Portsmouth community.
