An eccentric mix of colour brightens the personal ‘winter gardens’ which contrast with the softer outside landscapes. The new homes have been built for the council and are 100% affordable rent.

Design

A new dementia centre with a secure courtyard are on hand. The development makes a significant contribution to improving the provision of high quality, affordable accommodation for local older persons. All the homes were future-proofed discreetly to avoid an institutional feel. Designed as an Extra Care model with the view to provide a ‘Home for Life’, Hunters have worked towards the Gold dementia care design achievement.

Another challenge during the design development was to carefully ensure the separation between the residents of the flats and the day-users of the DRC. There are two progressive privacy doors which lead from the central communal lobby.

The selection of a specialist door entry system combined with the warden call system is suited to ensure that the public and dayusers cannot access the apartment areas, and similarly, the same system ensures residents do not access the DRC.

“I have so much independence now and my daughters don’t need to worry about me. I regularly go out and about to visit family members and to the shops with my carers. It’s nice to have the communal lounge and gardens, but it’s also really important to have my own space when I want privacy.”
