Hillingdon Civic Centre
Part of an ongoing initiative by the London Borough of Hillingdon to enhance the use and preservation of the Grade II-listed Civic Centre. Hunters Architects were the lead designers and planners for this series of transformative changes across the site which included a new reception area, art-deco library and staff area.
Located in the heart of Hillingdon, the Civic Centre stands as a symbol of the borough’s history and community spirit. It has been going through a careful transformation… One that thoughtfully brings together the charm of last century with the needs of the new.
One key part of this project is the public reception area. Created within the 1970s extension of the building, the space welcomes visitors with a slatted wood reception desk and original brickwork and flooring. Acoustic panels were added to soften the space and reduce echo.

The Oasis staff workspace received a makeover, designed to improve comfort and functionality while respecting the original character of the building. Hunters Architects approached each change with care and attention to detail. It has seats for 35 people to eat, talk, or meet.
The historic Art Deco wing has seen a standout transformation with the Art Deco Library, that brings fresh life to one of the Civic Centre’s most iconic spaces, blending heritage with modern design. Hunters and the library team created flexible spaces with study desks, a soundproofed children’s library, child-friendly WCs, and a learning centre. Author quotes decorate the walls, while white oak bookcases add elegance. A glass panel separates the children’s area, letting in light and reducing noise.
These changes are about preserving the spirit of Hillingdon’s Civic Centre and making sure it continues to serve the community with purpose and pride.
This project is located in the London Borough of Hillingdon.
