Hunters Extends King George Hospital

A new Hunters designed extension to the Elective Surgical Hub at King George Hospital has completed.

The £14million extension creates two new ultra clean operating theatres, expanded staff facilities, and doubles the number of recovery beds enabling Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust to undertake 100 additional operations each week within the theatres designed to facilitate robotic surgery and interoperative radiotherapy in the future.

The extension will benefit patients across north east London (NEL) as part of the work the Trust is doing with Barts Health and Homerton via the NEL acute provider collaborative.

The striking extension sits between two original wings of the hospital and extends to three storeys rather than the adjacent two. The detailed interior fit out took inspiration from the consultation process with staff, patients, and visitors ensuring an additional focus on improved clinical storage, easy to recognise nurse bases and maximising natural light in the public and staff areas. PALS offices, clinical equipment, workshops and a central drugs store have been incorporated into the design in response to site wide needs.

The outcome is a practical, state of the art surgical experience linking seamlessly with the original hospital buildings.

The KGH Elective Surgical Hub is just one of eight across the country to be accredited as part of a national scheme that recognises high standards and a commitment to training. It was also recognised at the HSJ Awards for helping patients get the care they need more quickly.

Morgan Parrack, Director commented “The project not only enables more patients to receive surgery at the hospital, but it also provides for an improved experience for them in a state of the art clinical environment. Elevating the staff and support spaces alongside the theatres will improve staff experiences and help future proof the department for the long term. It is one of a number of extensions and new builds Hunters are designing around the country, providing practical solutions and massively improved experiences.”
