‘Kings Speech’ Hospital Gets Exclusive Makeover

Hunters Healthcare Team has designed The London Clinic’s Rapid Diagnostics Centre in Harley Street, London where the King’s speech consultancy sessions took place.

The 6 storey buildings at 142-146 Harley Street had been refurbished by The Howard de Walden Estate into a series of consulting houses with a shell and core basement, Hunters explored to further fit out the building to create state of the art facilities and an exclusive healthcare experience.

At basement level, the diagnostic areas for ultrasound, mammography and MRI suite is a contemporary mix or spring colour palettes evoking daffodils and blossom, taken from the clients brand colours.

On the third-floor, the colposcopy diagnostic spaces have been designed with a paired back colour palette and natural finishes. The remainder of the building is largely given over to consulting rooms, waiting areas, staff facilities and associated support spaces. Hunters designed a range of custom joinery to enrich the patient experience and create a more homely and versatile space. The mews houses situated behind the main building feature the original roof trusses which have been conserved creating a visually striking structure in the new staff quarters.

The first floor of 146 Harley Street was the original ‘Kings Speech” Room, from which Lionel Logue provided his Speech and Language Therapy clinics to clients including King George VI. This is now an exclusive and relaxing waiting room for clients. A large portrait of King George hangs over the original fireplace.

Liam Gulliford, Architect said ‘Rarely do you get such a prestigious building to work on and with such an inspiring team. The concept design was to respect and compliment the beautiful Georgian buildings whilst providing a comfortable and serene place to receive outstanding healthcare. We’ve made use of natural light and original features wherever possible and created a welcoming place for all patients and staff whilst using our technical healthcare experience.
