As part of a broader refurbishment, Hunters has designed the second phase of the Homerton Hospital Critical Care Unit upgrade in East London.
The design of this project was deeply informed by the real-world experiences of frontline healthcare staff. Their input played a crucial role in shaping a functional, patient-centric environment that also caters to the needs of medical personnel.

State-of-the-art-equipment upgrades
Phase two focused on the development of the North Unit Critical Care: Intensive Care Unit, expanding the capacity of the facility by introducing six new isolation bed bays. These additions complement the twelve beds introduced in the earlier phase, significantly enhancing the hospital’s ability to accommodate critical care patients.
The upgrades are within the existing hospital footprint, and creates much-needed surge capacity while also addressing the urgent requirement for additional ancillary spaces including areas for relatives, a simulation suite, and efficient storage solutions.
We incorporated roof lights to bring natural light into staff and office areas. The new design features fresh, bright murals that mimic outdoor scenes, helping to create a calmer atmosphere for patients, visitors, and hospital staff alike.
Additionally, state-of-the-art equipment upgrades, such as automated dispensing cabinets and streamline stock control makes staff jobs easier.
This upgrade supported The Trust’s strategy to provide high-quality, safe care for critically ill patients and is part of several refurbishments designed by Hunters for NHS Trusts, involving our Architects and Civils & Structures teams.
