A New Standard for Community Healthcare at Highclere Medical Centre
Hunters designed the Highclere Medical Centre to provide a modern, functional healthcare facility for the local community. The new centre includes six consulting rooms and three treatment rooms, organised around a bright entrance and waiting area. Key clinical and consultancy spaces are located on the perimeter to maximise natural daylight, with a clear separation between public, clinical, and staff areas.
The design was developed through detailed analysis of clinical workflows and activity data from the previous centre, combined with projections for the new facility’s operational needs.

Former car park redeveloped into a new GP surgery
The building massing respects the scale of surrounding properties. A double-height aluminium entrance, extended at the corner, acts as a prominent architectural marker. The façades feature red brickwork with textured detailing, reflecting the local vernacular. A lime green canopy and horizontal brise soleil accentuate the entrance. The careful use of colour in the internal spaces supports wayfinding while enhancing the overall quality of the spaces.
The site, formerly a car park, retains mature trees that provide natural shading and soften the scheme. The design also addresses privacy concerns with the adjacent Treetops Sexual Assault Referral Centre by carefully configuring pedestrian access to prevent visual interaction between the two buildings.
This project involved relocating an outdated GP surgery from unsuitable premises a fit-for-purpose healthcare environment, enhancing patient and staff experience and establishing a vital healthcare hub for the Portsmouth community.
